The Real Purpose Of Government
Such “government purpose license grants” do not include the rights to use, modify, reproduce, release, perform, display, or disclose software/technical data for commercial purposes or to authorize others to do so. All of this requires a citizenry with the skills and dispositions necessary for republican self-government, that is, a citizen body whose members understand and act to promote justice. Although the government honors its responsibilities established by the Constitution, there is a considerable amount of debate over the government’s role in other aspects of citizens’ lives, such as healthcare and social programs. In contrast to many European nations, the United States’ government does not offer a social system of healthcare that covers all citizens. Many Americans criticize socialized healthcare, and believe that government should not play a role in the healthcare system. Americans also generally disfavor other social benefits, such as public housing.
In this sense of the word, welfare means a state of happiness and well-being within a society. While all governments share this broad purpose, they act to implement this goal to different degrees, depending on the values of society. Social welfare states, such as those found in much of Europe, provide extensive government services, including free public education, income support, and government-supplied health care. In the United States, with its strong emphasis on individualism, liberty, and free markets, the government plays a less active role.
The above abstract is just a gist of the basic purposes of a government. These tasks, are by no means easy, it takes a lot of planning and proper execution for successfully implementing the above purposes. In every state, the Executive Branch is headed by a governor who is directly elected by the people. In most states, other leaders in the executive branch are also directly elected, including the lieutenant governor, the attorney general, the secretary of state, and auditors and commissioners. States reserve the right to organize in any way, so they often vary greatly with regard to executive structure.
Protection means maintaining a strong national defense against foreign attack; adopting policies for armed forces, foreign policy, diplomacy, state-craft, negation, alliances. It means securing the borders of the nation against intrusion by non-citizens. The protection provided by the government is not confined to maintaining security within its borders. This includes physical attacks, such as the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and invisible attacks, such as cyber espionage.
Local governments provide a safety net for the destitute and needy. In addition, government supports the minimal moral duties and rights of a free society through schools, encouragement of religion and safe-guarding public monuments to the nation’s heroes. For the Founders the purpose of government is to secure and protect the natural rights of its citizens, their right to life, liberty and property.
